e Feast of e Pentecost invites one to reflect about
how the Holy Spirit transforms lives, individually and
collectively. Presently at Holy Trinity a series of changes
and transformations are taking place. For instance, as
many of you know, on July 31st, the Feast of St. Ignatius,
Martina O’Shea is retiring from her position as the Director
of Ignatian Retreats and Training. Having directed and
coordinated a plethora of retreats and having trained dozens
of directors, our parish community is deeply grateful for
Martinas keen wisdom and bold witness of faith. While
Martinas charisms are not replaceable, the search for a new
Director is underway.
In late June, Fr. Bill O’Neill will also be leaving the parish
to return to ministering to the refugees in the Jesuit
Refugee Service camps in Kenya. While with us only a few
months in the fall of 2022 and again this spring, Fr. Bill
has certainly made a significant contribution to the parish
by presiding at Masses, performing outreach to the sick,
offering video homilies and providing a collaborative and
generous presence.
Meanwhile, Fr. Jack Dennis, who joined our staff in

by Fr. C. Kevin Gillespie, S.J.
March, has been briefly assigned to help out at our Jesuit
parish in Charlotte, NC for two months. Fortunately, Fr.
Jack will return to Holy Trinity in August.
e past weeks have seen the lives of many of our young
parishioners transformed, with over 100 celebrating their
first communion, over 100 young adults confirmed, as
well as numerous baptisms.
Another way the Holy Spirit has inspired transformative
change is through our parishs Tithing Program. Ashley
Klick, our Pastoral Associate for Social Justice, coordinated
our Grants Committee of generous volunteers: Sue Blain,
Alejandra Obando, Bruce Cohen, Alrene Pietranton,
Jacqui Mooney and Lauren Wolkov.
e Committee sorted through a host of proposals from
91 nonprofit organizations. eir work required weeks of
careful reading and vibrant discussions after which they
determined to recommend to me that Holy Trinity Parish
award 30 local, regional and global organizations.
e amount available this year from the pledge and
general/holiday offerings is $443,000. Furthermore, I
concurred with e Committees recommendation that
we supplement the total with $70,000 from the Alms/
Community Fund, bringing the total funds available
to $513,000! ank you one and all for your amazing
generosity.

e large grant focus for 2024 is on violence
prevention in youth. e Committee thereby opted to
award grants totaling $100,000 to two organizations:
BEST Kids, Inc. ($65,000) and the T.R.I.G.G.E.R.
Project ($35,000). Grants were also awarded to Maria
Madre, our sister parish in El Salvador, and our
various projects in Haiti.
In addition to the large grant theme, e Committee
awarded small grants ($5,000-$20,000) to
organizations addressing environmental justice,
racial justice, refugees/migration, returning citizens,
homelessness, and youth. I should note that the
Committee is guided by our Jesuit Apostolic
Preferences: Showing the Way to God; Walking with
the Excluded; Journeying with Youth; and Care for
Our Common Home.
Yes, the Holy Spirit is truly inspiring our parish to live
out its Mission statement of “accompanyone another
in Christ, celebrate God’s love and transform lives.”
2024 tithe grant PrograM awardS
e Tithe Grant program (ten percent of parishioners
regular collections) seeks to address root causes
of social justice issues both locally and within the
global community. is concrete and ongoing
commitment to social justice is a priority among Holy
Trinity parishioners and its careful and transparent
distribution is an important responsibility of the
Social Justice Committee.
We are excited to award grants to 30 organizations -
including six new groups.
