Japanese Artists
Keisho Ohno
Keisho Ohno is a Tsugaru Shamisen player who mixes traditional Shamisen
music with modern and rock music. He is always a challenger in aspiring
nouvelle performance and high musical technique. He now has lots of fans
in and outside of Japan.
D.A.K AWA Odori Dancers
Awa Odori ( ) is the most famous of
many dance festivals held across Japan during
the Obon season in mid-August. Awa is the
former name for Tokushima Prefecture while
Odori means dance. A team of Awa Odori
dancers will be coming to Sakura Matsuri
this year!

Tamagawa University Dance Taiko Group
Kanadete sorou is a rock band founded by the leader,
Koni. Later he was joined by the vocalist Oyumi, the
guitarist Chiaki, and drummer Kentarou, appearing as a
group of four. They perform live with the historical
background of the Meiji and Taisho eras, dressed in
traditional Japanese clothing such as kimono and hakama..
They are a unique band mixing tradition with modernity.

Samurai Sword Soul
Samurai Sword Soul is the only theater company in New York
which employs TATE (Japanese sword stage ghting) in their
demonstrations and samurai dramas. SSS’s mission is to spread
the Bushi-Do, The Way of the Samurai, and to introduce TATE to
people who are not familiar with it.

Ai’s “Sakura Band
Ai Yamashita from Japan, a pianist, composer and arranger is leading her special band Ai’s Sakura
Band. They will perform Ai’s original compositions and arrangements that relate to sakura and Japan.
Anaguma Eisa: UW-Madisons Okinawan Taiko Club
The club will perform a traditional Okinawan folk dance called Eisa, which fuses Okinawan music with
drumming, dance choreography, and elements of martial arts. This is their 5th year participating in
Sakura Matsuri.
Anime USA Cosplay Fashion Show
Anime USA, Washington DC's anime convention that takes place in the fall, displays Japanese anime
inspired costumes to teach about anime and cosplay culture.
CheeRing School Japan, and Capitol Movement Inc, DC
Both Japanese and American children learned this dance through YouTube, and rehearse only one
day together. This cross-cultural performance began 4 years ago and is also performing at the
opening of the National Cherry Blossom Festival parade.

Students from Fox Mill Elementary School will entertain you with a selection of Japanese songs.

Shinto Priestess Rev. Kuniko Kanawa oers Kagura (Shinto theatrical dance) with the Cherry Blossom

Enjoy the performance of a mix of traditional festival songs as well as more contemporary
compositions that use taiko, fue (bamboo ute), and other narimono (percussion instruments).
New York Taiko Aiko Kai (NYTAK)
This ensemble combines several taiko groups from New York to bring you an energetic
performance of both traditional and contemporary music.
Okinawa Cultural Performance
For the Sakura Matsuri, our performances will include a variety of dance and song. We have
performers from the Washington D.C. area and Uechi ryu karate members traveling from Okinawa,
Japan. Relax and enjoy this ensemble with classical court, Okinawan bon, and lively childrens
dance (warabincha), to live music and Karate performances.
Okinawan Taiko Drummers of Wisconsin
High school students from Madison, Wisconsin will perform both modern and traditional
Okinawan Taiko Drumming. They are proud to be starting their second decade of performing at the
National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade and at the Sakura Matsuri Japanese Street Festival.
Ryukyu Sokyoku Hozon Kai -Sarina Sokyoku Kenkyusho
Classical Okinawan Koto performance. Members also play other instruments (sanshin, taiko) and
dance traditional Ryukyuan dance.
Rie Tamuro
Tamuro Rie is a 24 year old, folk style singer-songwriter from Nara, Japan.
ShinDaiko
A Japanese drumming ensemble based in Greater Boston. We are proud to showcase the intensity,
passion and history of Japanese drumming, a tradition spanning thousands of years. Our
multi-instrumentalist member roster also allows us to incorporate modern instruments and styles
into our ensemble pieces.
Shodo (Calligraphy) Performances
Teams of students from both Thomas Jeerson High School and The College of William and Mary
will do street performances of calligraphy on a giant sheet of paper (9x16ft) with dance and music.
SUNY Geneseo Japanese Culture Club
Soran Bushi ( ) is a traditional co-ed Japanese dance from Hokkaido that portrays
shermen at work. It is a very popular dance commonly taught in schools all throughout Japan.
Tamagawa University Dance & Taiko Group
Thundering taiko drumming meets traditional Japanese dance by drummers and dancers from
Tamagawa University. It is one of the top-ranking taiko groups in Japan coming out of Japans top
performing arts university.
University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) – Soran Bushi Squad
Soran Bushi is traditional Japanese sherman dance that originated from Hokkaido in Northern
Japan. UMCP’s Soran Bushi Squad has been active for 10 years now!
Washington DC Kimono Club
The Washington DC Kimono Club will demonstrate a gorgeous kimono fashion show and a dressing
demonstration using dierent types of kimono – entertaining and educational!
Yosakoi Dance Project – 10tecomai
The group will perform the exciting matsuri-style dance of “Yosakoi" – an energetic exciting fusion of
Japanese tradition with contemporary styles of music and dance. For over 10 years 10tecomai has
remained one of the few teams in all of the United States that dances this exciting style.

Aikido of Arlington
Demonstration of a variety of techniques, including what to do to gain control if being attacked.
They will also show weapons (jos/bokkens) and open handed techniques.
Capital Area Jodokai
The Capital Area Jodokai will show a 400-year-old art, Shindo Muso Ryu-jo, which illustrates the use
of a sta versus the Japanese sword. We will also demonstrate aliated arts showcasing jutte,
kusarigama, tanjo and swords.
Capital Katori
Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu is one of the oldest (more than 500 years old) and continually
passed down Japanese sword-based bujutus. Historically prominent and highly regarded, the
government of Japan deemed it a national treasure.
Hobyokai / Hobyokan Classical Japanese Martial Arts
We will be demonstrating classical swordsmanship and a variety of other weapons systems created
by the Samurai during the 16th and 17th centuries.
JTR Jujitsu
JTR Jujutsu is a Dai Nippon Butoku Kai member and teaches a traditional form of Jujutsu. JTR will
incorporate group techniques, sparring and weapons into the demonstration.
KenKonKai Dojo – Japanese Sword Martial Arts
Part of the Capital Area Budokai and Jodokai, come and appreciate a demonstration of Japanese
sword kata and cutting from Nakamura Ryu Batto-o and Mugai Ryu Iaihyo-do.
Kyudo – Japanese Ceremonial Archery
Come to watch a continuous rotation of group archery shooting (embu no dose) demonstrating
the individual and group dynamics which kyudo demands of its practitioners.
Yamajiro Ninja Academy
The Yamajiro Dojo specializes in Ninpo, teaching ninjutsu and jujutsu to continue carrying on the
legacy of creating the world’s greatest tacticians and self-defense experts.
Samurai Sword Soul
Samurai Sword Soul is the only theater company in New York which employs TATE (Japanese sword

The Japanese Americans’ Care Fund will be showing how to make
gyudon. Gyudon is a bowl of rice topped with cooked beef and onion
together in a mild sweet soy sauce-based sauce and is one of Japan’s
most popular dishes. It’s considered a comfort dish and will warm you up!
