SONOMA COUNTY, Calif. --
The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office has released more details about a drowning on the
Sonoma Coast north of Bodega
Bay this morning.
Sheriff's Sgt. Dave Thompson said a 51-year-old Auburn woman and her boyfriend, prev
iously believed to be her husband, were walking two pug
dogs along Portuguese Beach when one of the dogs was swept into the surf.
The woman tried to save the dog and was also dragged into the surf, Thompson said. A
passerby summoned State Parks rangers, Thompson said.

uReport: Portuguese Beach drowning
The boyfriend, a State Parks ranger and another person were able to get the woman ba
ck on the shore, but she had been in the cold water for about
20-25 minutes, Thompson said.
State Parks personnel gave the woman CPR before the Sonoma County sheriff's helicopt
er arrived but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The helicopter crew used a long-line to bring the woman to the top of a nearby bluff
and a chaplain responded to the scene, Thompson said.
The dog perished and washed ashore, Thompson said.
The Sonoma County coroner's office has not released the woman's identity.

PACIFICA, CA --
A 44-year-old woman died after being swept underwater by a wave at Sharp Park Beach
in Pacifica Sunday afternoon, according
to police.
Shortly before 1:45 p.m., Pacifica police officers and members of the North County F
ire Department responded to a report of a possible drowning
Arriving officers found the woman floating face down in the water about 35 feet from
shore, Pacifica police said.
The victim was pulled from the water by two members of the fire department. She was
taken to Seton Medical Center and pronounced dead a short
time later, according to police.
After talking with family members and witnesses at the scene, investigators determin
ed the woman had entered the water to rescue one of her dogs
and was knocked down by a large wave and swept away from the beach. Family members a
nd witnesses were unable to reach her in the heavy surf.
The dog was able to swim back to shore, police said.
The woman, whose name is not being released until her family is notified of the deat
h, drowned in the same area where a 44-year-old man is
presumed to have drowned less than two weeks ago.
